"In the 1960s, activists and authors applied Marxist analysis to issues of sexuality and the family. Instead of focusing solely on personal identity, these activist scholars argued that sexuality was directly related to economic factors such as labor, health care, and education. This book seeks to revive dialectical materialist interpretations of sexuality, relevant to K-12 settings and society. Issues addressed include: LGBTQ community and history, gender-based harassment and bullying, sexuality and the curriculum, ideological origins of homophobia, theories of the family (conservative, psychoanalytical, anarchist, materialist), critiques of postmodernism, socialist feminism, and activist tactics/strategies for organizing in K-12 settings"--Provided by publisher

Education and Gender draws on international research from the USA, the UK, India, Mexico, Sub-Saharan Africa and the Caribbean, to provide a comprehensive global overview of the relationship between gender and education. Rooting constructions of gender and sexuality in specific geographical contexts, the contributors consider a range of issues. Themes discussed include the gender gap in educational attainment; pedagogical strategies; stereotyping in curricula; and education policy. Drawing on best practices worldwide, the contributors identify the current gaps and propose solutions to promote gender-just, equitable and pluralistic societies. Each chapter includes key questions to encourage active engagement with the subject and a list of further reading to support taking the exploration further.

"Gender identity and expression make up a diverse range of experiences. Today we are moving towards a world where our understanding of gender isn't so rigid. It helps to think of gender as a spectrum of identities rather than a binary system of only boy/girl. There are people who identify in all the different places within the spectrum, and some who feel their identity falls outside of the spectrum all together"--
